The Yellow Porsche
Porsche 911
Loud, low and impossible to miss.
The 911 shape has barely changed since 1963, and that is the whole point. Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche drew a roofline that sweeps from the windscreen all the way to the tail in one unbroken curve, and it turned out to be one of those rare designs nobody could improve on. Sixty years later you can still spot one from a block away.
What makes a 911 odd is that the engine sits behind the back wheels rather than up front. Engineers said it should not work. It won Le Mans, Daytona and the Monte Carlo Rally anyway.
The wide rear arches and the big "whale tail" on the back come from the 911 Turbo of the mid-seventies — the car that earned the nickname "the widowmaker" because the turbo arrived all at once. Ours is a tribute, built to look the part in a yellow you can spot from the far end of the school car park. Kids tend to hear it before they see it.
